Incoming Ombudsman Samuel Martires, the first appointee of President Duterte to the Supreme Court, must be lauded for his commitment that he would not allow himself or his office to be a tool for political persecution.
Only time would tell on the seriousness and efficacy of Martires’ commitment as he is urged not to repeat past controversial decisions, as a Justice of the Sandiganbayan and the Supreme Court, which were perceived to have favored the powers that be.
Citizens will act as sentinels to watch the actions of the Ombudsman, protect his independence, and repel partisan incursions on his office.
It is hoped that said vow will be steadfast during his incumbency as pressures will certainly mount to erode his independence.
Martires’ independent posture will be tested by favors and pressures coming no less from the groups allied with the appointing power.
Ideally, the Ombudsman should be allowed to perform his constitutional duty as graft buster in a political vacuum.
